Butterfield Bicycles

Butterfield Cycles

"I’ve ridden a bike as long as I can remember so you could say I have over 50 years’ experience! I really got into lightweight bikes in my early 20s when I avidly read travel books and was inspired by the Rough Stuff Fellowship. Once I had bought my first Reynolds tubed bike, I started touring, joining the University cycle club with whom I enjoyed many adventures. A trans Europe trip was followed by an overland trip to Africa. Life and family then took priority over touring and I experienced mountain biking, triathlons, time trials, and track riding. I’ve now returned to touring as my main pastime, with lots of new trips in the pipeline, which gives me the opportunity to test all the new and exciting products out there.
When the opportunity came along to buy the shop from Neil Orrell, I jumped at it and was lucky enough to be trained in frame building by one of the best. I totally believe in customer service and support and this is at the heart of everything I do. I love touring cycling, and the shop reflects this, but we cater for all cyclists, whatever their interest and budget."
Peter Butterfield, Store Manager.

About the store

"Butterfield Bicycles is a friendly, family owned bicycle shop, offering sales, repairs, and bespoke, hand-built steel frames. We call ourselves cycle engineers as we can design, fabricate and weld bicycles and bicycle solutions.
Our staff are City and Guilds trained cycle mechanics with many years of experience. In addition to Peter Butterfield, team members include: Daniel Butterfield, who’s expertise includes modern road bikes, wheel building and riding a fixie; Daniel Lyne, a mountain bike rider, specifically downhill, who expertise is in frame building, suspension, e-bikes, e-bike conversions, and wheel building; Will McFall, our newest recruit, who works part time, and rides mountain bikes. We’re not bike snobs by any means, and we repair and service all brands, whatever their condition. Advice is freely given – don’t be afraid to ask. We specialise in a number of areas, including bike fitting, frame building and repairs, e-bike conversions, electric tricycles but mainly touring bikes and equipment. We have an upstairs showroom for our Genesis framesets and touring bikes (having designed and built our own touring bikes we’re in a position to say that the Genesis bikes we sell are excellent. The framesets allow customers to spec and build their own dream bike). Lightweight tents, sleeping bags, mats, stoves and Lifeventure equipment can all be found on display. Tents can be pitched to try before you by (by appointment). A wide range of racks, bags and panniers are stocked.
The premises have been used as a bicycle shop since 1948 and we are the fourth set of owners. We are continually developing, improving and expanding what we offer, but always with the customer at the heart of what we do."
