Mudguards & Tyres for your Genesis Cross bike

We're often asked  what mudguards & tyres you can fit to the Day 01 & Croix de Fer range. There are undoubtedly many options, but here's what we've been using on our own bikes.

MUDGUARDS

With the standard 700x35C Continental Speed king Cross Tyre we've fitted a set of SKS_P50_Chromoplastic full length guards, with good results. For any of the current products on the market you'll need to source a longer bolt & spacer and strategically bend the Disc side stay ever so slightly to allow clearance of the disc calliper (see images below). We'd advise that any fitment of guards is carried out by your Genesis Dealer, who will also be well placed to advise on sourcing the required bolt & spacer. The outcome is a neat & tidy factory look fitment ... that will keep you in the saddle for longer over the Winter).

TYRES

Next up its tyres! You can go bigger than those fitted, but clearance & mudguard fitment then becomes somewhat more trial & error ..... so always check with your Dealer before purchasing.

We've not tried those listed below with guards, but we know they allow sufficient clearance that they'll happily clear the stays & fork crown.

  • Cross Use - Continental Cyclocross Speed Up To 700x42C
  • Commuting - Continental Contact OR Top Contact 700x42C (With Mudguards consider using 700x37C)

I brought my Croix De Fer from the UK to Sweden where we now live. I love the disc brake mudgaurd fixing solution. Whereabouts can I purchase the standoff bolts, ideally online. By the way, I love your brand, great job. Steve

You've fitted the black plastic safety breakaway for the front stays on the back of the bike there ; is that the limited edition Alfine with the reverse gear? ;)

Hi Steve. If your LBS does not have anything suitable, we've used stainless M4 Allen Cap screws, these and the spacers/pillars can be found in many online fastenings companies. Most search engines will return a wide selection if you simply enter 'M4 Allen Cap Screw' & 'M4 spacer'. We were fortunate & had a disc specific Pannier rack to raid parts from (M:Part ridge .... should you also need a Rack!!). Chris

Use Presta valve nuts to space it out, adjustable length and the perfect diameter hold, they will have tons at your LBS!

Interesting to hear that you can get SKS P50s fitted with 35c Speed Kings - since with my 2011 Croix de Fer I cannot get sufficient clearance for this combination under the front fork. Have you changed the fork design for 2012? The other question Croix de Fer owners might like answering is what good quality touring-capable rear racks you've found that fit around the disk brake... Thanks!

Any suggestions on Mudguard for the upcoming fortitude? Full length 29er Mudguards seem as plentiful as rocking horse droppings.

Thanks - this is useful - I am considering commuterising the new day 1 SS with discs and was wondering how the whole mudguard thing might work. Have you fitted the black safety breakaways on the back to allow the rear wheel to be removed without having to undo the bolts??

Hi oxym0r0n , Technically running the Safety clips on the front is a necessity (slightly modified image to be uploaded - as you'll notice ours are on the back!). But yes you are correct, running some on the rear will take away some of the hassle of getting the wheel out. Steve - Other than adding pannier bosses to the outside of the fork legs, the fork dimensions are otherwise the same. I've run another configuration with the Steel crossers that involved cutting off the mudguard in front of the bridge mount, this also allowed for a few other tyre combo's. Re:Panniers - additional Tech piece to follow (but we've tried M:Part Ridge, which myself & numerous colleagues have been using). Last but not least - Peter - We'll look into Fortitude guards & post a tech piece when we have an answer!

will you guys make a smaller frame than a 52 cm ? I love your day one alfine 11 but right now I ride a 48 cm moving to a 50 cm should be ok but a 52cm seem a bit big for me. There seem to be a new trend in bikes companies not to make small size frames, hope that stop soon or I'll have to get a custom made bike wich will cost me a lot more.

Would this not be a lot easier if the disc mounts were between the stays instead of the outside of the seat stay? It would similarly make fitting a rear pannier a lot easier. Is there reason for this?

If you use 700x35C tyres you should absolutely choose the SKS fenders in 700x45mm. The 700x38 mm fenders do not provide enough clearance in the front.

Noticed a Raleigh Sojourn touring bike sporting a set of disc-specific mudguards today, they feature angled stays which run under the brake, might be of interest to CDF owners. I decided to leave my own Croix de Fer without the guards as I ran it on ice spikes over winter (which definitely weren't going to clear with guards! Never missed them, LOVE the bike, cheers to all at Gensis!
